Fabric Spotlight: What's all the fuss about Bamboo Lyocell?

Bamboo lyocell is one of the most innovative fabrics currently on the market, with bamboo itself considered to be one of the most sustainable resources our planet has to offer.

Bamboo absorbs five times more carbon dioxide and produces up to 35% more oxygen than normal hardwood trees, helping to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases. This plant has an extensive root system making it renowned for its soil improving qualities, helping to rebuild eroded soil and improve hydrological functions. When the bamboo is harvested, it's very quick to regenerate itself, growing up to four feet every day, all thanks to its roots.

Lyocell fibres are produced from wood pulp. Bamboo lyocell is created using a closed-loop system by which the bamboo pulp is broken down using a non-toxic solvent called amine oxide. 99% of this solvent and the water used in the process are recovered and reused batch after batch. Any waste is minimal and harmless to the environment.

At Roekate, we use bamboo lyocell in our Hannah Sweatshirt and Sweatpants. It is combined with organic and recycled cotton to create our luxurious fleece, which is four times softer and heavier than regular fleece. Not only is this fabric incredibly comfortable, anti-creasing and eco-friendly, it has a number of superior qualities:

  • Anti-bacterial
  • Sweat-wicking
  • Hypoallergenic (perfect for sensitive skin)
  • Thermal-regulating
  • UV-resistant

Unlike virgin polyester or viscose, bamboo lyocell is made from almost 100% organic ingredients, it is completely biodegradable and decomposes in as little as 8 days.

Bamboo lyocell is good for both people and planet – that’s why it was hand-selected by our team to produce our luxury garments, designed to last a lifetime.
